First Aid:
Basic Rabbit Diseases
Ear mite: Ear infection that causes severe damage to the skin lining of the ear canal. Treatment: Clean the hutch with bleach, two or three drops of mineral oil in the ear, or flea powder in the ear.
Malocclusion: An inherited condition where the lower teeth extend in front of the upper teeth. The teeth will need to be cut. (AKA buck or wolf teeth)
Snuffles: Sneezing, runny nose, teary eyes, body temperature lower than normal. No medication. Improve ventilation and reduce stress.
Sore hocks: Red and swollen spots on the bottom of the hind feet. Very painful and fur may be rubbed off. Medicate with Preparation-H or Neosporin–apply to hocks two times a day. Putting a board in the cage is helpful, too.
Mucdid Enteritis: Jelly-like substance around the manure. Rabbit refuses to eat and may grind its teeth. Isolate rabbit to a clean cage. High fiber and low energy diet. Give antibiotic in water to fight secondary
Winter Care
Begin to winterize when weather gets cool (October/November). Rabbits can handle cold weather better than the summer heat. Below are the necessary items to prepare for the wintry days ahead:
- Two water bottles
- Plastic tarp
- Hay
- Two crocks
- Straw
- Fresh water two times a day
- Wipe down their ears
- Shady tree
- Wet down the hutch
- Fan
- Place a frozen water bottle in the cage
Summer Care
Rabbits need special attention during the summer months. Rabbits cool themselves through their ears. Watch out for heat exhaustion. Below are some helpful hints to cool your rabbit down:
